Three people, including a six-year-old boy, were tragically killed when an Amtrak train collided with their car in North Tonawanda, New York on Friday night.
A devastating tragedy has struck the community of North Tonawanda in upstate New York, where a horrific car-train collision claimed the lives of three individuals, among them a young child. On Friday evening, an Amtrak train traveling northward on the tracks mercilessly struck a car, leaving three victims with no chance of survival.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and paramedics, rushed to the scene of the accident and found the passengers of the crumpled vehicle trapped within its wreckage. Despite valiant efforts to extricate them and administer lifesaving measures, all three victims were declared deceased at the scene.
The victims have been identified as a 69-year-old man, a 66-year-old woman, and a heartbreaking six-year-old boy. Their identities have not yet been publicly disclosed, and authorities have not been immediately available for further details.
The Amtrak train involved in the fatal crash was scheduled to travel from New York City to Niagara, but tragedy struck near the intersection of Felton Street and River Road in North Tonawanda. According to the North Tonawanda Police Department, the train slammed into the passenger vehicle around 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17th.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported among the 21 passengers and crew members aboard Amtrak's No. 281 train. The agency confirmed that the train was headed to its intended destination in Niagara, New York, but the circumstances surrounding the vehicle's presence on the tracks remain unclear.
The fatal crash has shocked and devastated the North Tonawanda community, and emergency personnel worked tirelessly for two hours to respond to the scene. North Tonawanda Police Chief Keith Glass expressed the profound grief and sorrow felt by the responding teams.
"I can tell you everybody is hurting. I'm not doing great," Glass stated in an interview with WKBW Buffalo. "We got help luckily coming this week that the fire department, police department, and EMT's are all going to be sitting down with counselors, and we're all going to get through this."
The Federal Transit Administration and other relevant agencies have launched a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the deadly accident. The investigation aims to shed light on why the car was obstructing the train tracks and how to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
