Ana Navarro Explains Why She Left the GOP and Became a DNC Host

Former Republican and current "The View" co-host Ana Navarro describes why she broke with the Republican Party in 2016 and why she is now hosting the second night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

"The View" co-host and CNN political commentator Ana Navarro has opened up about her decision to accept the hosting gig for night two of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) and her reasons for leaving the Republican Party.

On Tuesday's edition of "CNN News Central," CNN co-host John Berman asked Navarro about her shift in political allegiances. Navarro stated that she stopped supporting Republicans in 2016 after former President Trump became the GOP nominee, citing his infamous Access Hollywood tape as a key factor.

"I broke with Donald Trump, with the Republican Party, the Trump party, way back then, and I haven't looked back," she said. "Frankly, I did all I could to get Joe Biden elected…and I'm incredibly excited, elated to help my girl Kamala accept the nomination here today."

Despite her regular expression of liberal viewpoints on CNN and "The View," Navarro claims she is still a "registered Republican." She explained that she was offered the hosting gig while Biden was still the nominee and did not hesitate to take it.

"I've had this clear from the get-go. I've had this clear from 2016. My purpose is to make sure that Donald Trump does not get anywhere near the White House. We failed in 2016, we're not going to fail in 2024," she declared.

Navarro believes the enthusiasm for Harris as the Democratic nominee will extend to independents and other voters. "This campaign has captured lightning in a bottle, and the last four weeks, it's because it's been organic, because it's been authentic, because it's been joyful," she said. "You want to be part of the excitement…the happiness, right? And enthusiasm is contagious."

While addressing criticism over Harris's handling of the border crisis, Navarro clarified that Harris was not the "border czar" as Republicans have labeled her. She claimed Trump's interference in immigration negotiations was responsible for the failure to reach a deal.

Regarding immigration, a Fox News poll revealed that nine out of ten voters consider the U.S. southern border situation an emergency or a major problem. However, more voters blame the Biden administration's lack of enforcement at the border than former President Trump and the Senate GOP for failed immigration legislation.
