Jimmerson's boxing career spanned from 1985 to 2002, during which he amassed a record of 33-18 with 17 knockouts. His professional debut was against Sal Tujillo in San Diego on April 25, 1985. He retired from boxing on November 23, 2002, after losing his final nine fights.
Jimmerson's legacy, however, is not defined by his boxing record but by his appearance in the first UFC competition on November 12, 1993, in Denver. In that landmark event, Jimmerson faced Royce Gracie, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu master. Jimmerson's decision to wear only one glove was both practical and symbolic.
The practical reason was to make it easier for the referees to see if he tapped out, a common submission maneuver in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The symbolic reason was to demonstrate that he was a boxer, a representative of a traditional combat sport, and willing to test his skills against an opponent from a different discipline.
