Former MVP and three-time All-Star Jose Abreu has been sent down to the minor leagues by the Houston Astros due to ongoing struggles at the Major League level.
In the midst of a disappointing start to the 2023 season, the Houston Astros have made a significant move by sending veteran first baseman Jose Abreu down to the minor leagues. The decision comes after Abreu, who signed a three-year, $60 million deal with Houston prior to the campaign, has struggled mightily at the plate.
In 22 big league games this season, Abreu has hit a mere .099 with just one extra-base hit and three RBI. These numbers are a far cry from the production that earned him the MVP award in the truncated 2020 season and three Silver Slugger Awards during his first 10 seasons in the Major Leagues.
The Astros' general manager, Dana Brown, explained that the decision to send Abreu down was made after a meeting involving Abreu, coaches, and front-office personnel. Brown noted that Abreu, who is not yet arbitration-eligible, accepted the option.
Brown praised Abreu's character and attitude, noting his determination to get back to the level of play that made him one of the best hitters in the league just a few years ago. Abreu expressed a desire to get more at-bats and receive detailed instruction to improve his performance.
"He got to the point where he was frustrated," Brown said. "It’s rare to do it. But I think it tells us about his dedication and commitment and I don’t think he sees this as a long-term and I don’t think we see it as a long-term thing."
Brown emphasized that the goal is for Abreu to make adjustments, regain his rhythm and timing, and return to the Astros in a matter of weeks.
Abreu's struggles are not an isolated incident for the Astros. The team as a whole has struggled in the early going, entering Tuesday's game with a disappointing 9-19 record. The Astros' offense has been particularly lackluster, ranking near the bottom of the league in several key offensive categories.
