The shooting, which occurred early Saturday morning, left Battie's brother, Tony Battie IV, deceased. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported that several other individuals were also wounded in the incident.

Freeze shared the update on Battie's condition on Twitter, expressing concern and requesting continued prayers for the injured player.

"Auburn family. Please continue to pray for Brian Battie. There was a set back last night and he's still on a ventilator," Freeze tweeted.

Battie, who transferred to Auburn from the University of South Florida after the 2022 season, has had a promising start with the Tigers. In his first year with the team, he rushed for 227 yards and a touchdown. Prior to his transfer, Battie had a standout season at South Florida, rushing for 1,185 yards and eight touchdowns, earning him an All-American recognition in 2021 as a return specialist.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating the deadly incident. Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at around 3:30 a.m. ET and found multiple shooting victims in the parking lot of the establishment where the incident occurred.

Four additional victims were transported to hospitals in Manatee and Sarasota Counties. Officials have stated that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and have not yet disclosed the motives behind the violence.
