With just six months to go until the 2024 presidential election, the race between incumbent President Biden and former President Trump remains incredibly close, with polls indicating a virtual dead heat.

According to a recent national poll by USA Today and Suffolk University, Biden and Trump each stand at 37% support among registered voters. Democrat-turned-independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is at 8%, while 5% back other independent or third party candidates.

The survey is the second in a day to suggest an extremely close contest between Biden and Trump. An ABC News/Ipsos poll released Sunday showed Trump holding a narrow lead among adults, but Biden leading among registered voters and likely voters.

The Suffolk poll suggests that nearly a quarter of voters (24%) say they might change their minds ahead of the fall election, with 12% saying they have not yet made their choice.

"When we think about the race tied with just 26 weeks to go, we have to consider that people tune out politics and the party conventions in July and August," said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center. "That leaves just 17 weeks for candidates to actively campaign, and it's actually 13 or 14 weeks when you consider states where early voting starts weeks before Election Day."

While national surveys garner plenty of attention, the race for the White House is a battle for the states and their electoral votes, which places a spotlight on battleground state polling.

Recent polling in key swing states, including surveys from Fox News, indicate close contests.

In Pennsylvania, a Fox News poll from April showed Trump leading Biden by 4 points, 46% to 42%. In Michigan, a Fox News poll from March showed Biden leading Trump by 4 points, 45% to 41%. And in Wisconsin, a Fox News poll from February showed Trump leading Biden by 3 points, 44% to 41%.

These polls suggest that the race in the swing states is fluid, and that either candidate could emerge victorious in November.

The close race between Biden and Trump is likely to intensify in the coming months, as the candidates ramp up their campaigns and focus on winning over voters in the key battleground states.
