Biden Donor Declines to Support Kamala Harris, Citing Lack of Convention

A prominent Democratic megadonor who contributed $1 million to the Biden campaign has announced his refusal to donate to Vice President Kamala Harris, citing concerns about her ability to defeat former President Trump and the absence of a Democratic convention.

Orlando-based attorney John Morgan, who previously donated a substantial sum to the Biden campaign, expressed his disapproval of the potential "coronation" of Harris as the Democratic nominee without a proper convention. He believes that a convention would have provided a more robust and competitive selection process, resulting in a stronger candidate.

Morgan asserted that Harris lacks the electoral strength to prevail over Trump, citing his belief that she cannot garner sufficient support to secure victory. He expressed his apprehension about the Democratic Party's decision to endorse Harris without allowing a more thorough assessment of other potential candidates.

Morgan suggested a range of alternative candidates who, in his opinion, possess greater electability than Harris. He proposed names such as Joe Manchin, Andy Beshear, Josh Shapiro, and Mark Kelly, arguing that these individuals would present a more formidable challenge to Trump.

According to a recent New York Times assessment, Harris trails Trump by approximately two percentage points in recent polls. However, this margin is slightly narrower than the three percentage point deficit that Biden faced on average in his matchups against Trump.

Nonetheless, a New York Times/Siena College poll conducted before Biden withdrew from the race and the assassination attempt on Trump at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally indicated that Harris was only trailing Trump by one percentage point in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.

In addition, Harris held a five percentage point lead over Trump in Virginia, a state where Biden had only a narrow advantage over the Republican candidate. Harris also performed slightly better than Biden among Black voters, younger voters, and women in both Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Morgan's withdrawal of support from Harris raises questions about the Democratic Party's strategy for the upcoming election. The party's decision to endorse Harris without a convention has drawn criticism from some quarters, who argue that it undermines the principles of democracy and representation.
