Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, has accused Vice President Kamala Harris' border policies of leading to the government losing thousands of migrant children to traffickers. Vance made the statement at a Georgia campaign event, citing an alarming new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general's report.
The report reveals that approximately 320,000 unaccompanied alien children have gone missing within the immigration enforcement system after being released from federal custody by the Biden-Harris administration. Vance believes that this unacceptable finding is a direct result of the administration's open borders policies and refusal to enforce immigration law.

Migrant children are particularly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse during their journey to the US border. They are often subjected to physical, mental, and sexual abuse. Last year, the New York Times published a series of articles detailing the harrowing experiences of migrant children forced into sex trafficking and forced labor in order to repay smuggling debts.
Previously, the administration had acknowledged losing track of 85,000 unaccompanied alien children, but this number has now risen dramatically. Despite the severity of the problem, no administration officials have been held accountable.

According to Vance, the Biden-Harris administration's policies, such as ending the Migrant Protection Protocols and exempting unaccompanied alien children from immediate border expulsion under Title 42, have contributed to the problem. Due to these policies, migrant children are released into American communities, increasing their risk of falling into the hands of traffickers.
The inspector general's report also found that nearly 30,000 unaccompanied alien children who received a Notice to Appear failed to appear in immigration court. Additionally, 291,000 migrant children who did not receive the necessary paperwork have completely disappeared.

The report states that "by not issuing NTAs to all [unaccompanied alien children], ICE limits its chances of having contact with [them] when they are released from HHS’ custody, which reduces opportunities to verify their safety."
Vance emphasized the timing of the report's release, which came just one day after the left endorsed a policy platform that supports amnesty for nearly every illegal alien in the country, including potential human traffickers.

He criticized the administration's claimed "compassionate" immigration policy, highlighting that its actions have led to a disturbing reality.
Vance's statements align with concerns raised by former Border Patrol Union chief Brandon Judd, who accused Harris of failing to address the "root causes" of illegal immigration. Judd pointed to a staggering 500,000 vulnerable migrant children being trafficked or smuggled at the border.
