Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, while expressing joy over the successful release, expressed reservations about the potential consequences of the deal. "Continuing to trade innocent Americans for actual Russian criminals held in the U.S. and elsewhere sends a dangerous message to Putin that only encourages further hostage taking by his regime," McCaul warned.

President Joe Biden announced the release of the detainees, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan, during a White House address. "They're out of Russia. Earlier today, they were flown to Turkey, and soon they'll be wheels up on their way home to see their families," Biden said.
