California Doctor Accused of Attempted Murder Faces Mental Health Plea

The wife of a California doctor charged with driving his family off a cliff last year has requested mental health treatment for her husband instead of prison time. Neha Patel's plea came during a Thursday court appearance, where she testified about her husband's character and mental health struggles.

Dharmesh Patel, a 42-year-old Pasadena doctor, was charged in January 2023 with three counts of first-degree attempted murder after he allegedly drove his Tesla off a cliff, seriously injuring himself, his wife, and their two children.

Neha Patel, his wife, made an emotional plea to the court on Thursday, asking for her husband to receive mental health treatment rather than face criminal charges. She described Dharmesh as a "down-to-earth" and "humble" man who has always been loyal to her.

"I was drawn to him because he was the most down-to-earth and humble man I've ever met," Neha Patel said. "Dharmesh has always been loyal to me both as a boyfriend and as a husband."

She also highlighted the impact her husband's absence has had on their children.

"Seeing my kids in constant pain is one of the hardest things I've had to endure," she told the judge. "Once I tuck my children into bed at night I'm reminded of my own solitude. I really miss my best friend. I really miss my partner in my life."

Neha Patel's request comes after she reportedly told first responders immediately after the crash that her husband "tried to kill us" and "intentionally drove off the side."

However, Dr. Yan Chan, who examined Patel, testified that he had diagnosed him with schizoaffective disorder, a condition that combines symptoms of schizophrenia and mood disorders. He noted that Patel had expressed paranoia and believed his mailman was after him and his children were at risk of being sex trafficked.

The prosecution has presented evidence, including witness accounts and video footage, that suggests Patel drove his Tesla straight off the cliff without braking or swerving.

The court is currently considering Neha Patel's request for mental health treatment for her husband. The final decision will determine whether Dharmesh Patel faces imprisonment or receives the treatment he needs.

"I want members of the court to know the health and safety of my family is of paramount importance," Neha Patel said. "We need him in our lives, and it has been over a year and a half since my children or I have seen or spoken to Dharmesh. … We are not a family without him."
