Governor Gavin Newsom has secured federal assistance to combat the devastating Park Fire, which continues to rage across the state. The aid will provide additional resources and funding to support firefighting efforts and disaster relief.
Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that California has secured federal assistance to support the state's response to the rapidly burning Park Fire. The assistance, approved by President Joe Biden, will provide additional resources and funding to enhance firefighting efforts and support disaster relief operations.
California Receives Federal Aid to Tackle Park Fire
The Park Fire, which erupted on July 30th in Riverside County, has consumed over 2,500 acres and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents. The blaze has destroyed multiple structures and threatened critical infrastructure.
"We are grateful for the federal government's swift response in providing assistance to California during this critical time," said Governor Newsom. "This aid will bolster our firefighting efforts and help us recover from the devastating impacts of this wildfire."
The federal assistance package includes:
* **Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG):** A grant that will cover 75% of the eligible firefighting costs incurred by the state and local governments.
* **Major Disaster Declaration:** A declaration that will unlock additional federal resources, including personnel, equipment, and funding for disaster relief and recovery efforts.
* **Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP):** Additional food assistance for individuals and families affected by the fire.
* **Temporary Emergency Housing Assistance (TEHA):** Assistance with temporary housing for those who have lost their homes or have been displaced due to the fire.
"The Park Fire has taken a significant toll on our communities," said Governor Newsom. "We are committed to providing assistance to those impacted by the fire and working together with our federal partners to ensure a swift and effective recovery."
The federal assistance will augment the state's ongoing firefighting efforts, which involve over 1,500 firefighters, multiple aircraft, and extensive ground resources. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is leading the firefighting operations, with support from local fire departments, the National Guard, and federal agencies.
"The federal assistance will be invaluable in our efforts to contain and extinguish this fire," said Chief Thom Porter, CAL FIRE Director. "This is a complex and dangerous fire, but we are confident that with this additional support, we can protect lives and property."
