Ahead of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, police officers are undergoing specialized training to handle potential protests and volatile incidents. However, the city faces an ongoing crime crisis, with significant increases in murder, robbery, theft, and motor vehicle theft.
The Chicago Police Department (CPD) is ramping up its training efforts in preparation for the upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC), which is expected to draw an estimated 50,000 visitors and attract massive protests. Officers are undergoing two days of specialized training, focusing on handling assaults and attacks, using body shields, protecting the public, and evacuating the injured.
"We will not tolerate the violence. We will not tolerate the vandalism," said Police Superintendent Larry Snelling. "We will not allow people to come into the city to destroy it and leave."
The CPD is deploying 2,500 officers for "tier one training," specifically designed for more potentially volatile incidents. All officers will participate in some form of training for the event.
The training comes as Chicago grapples with a surge in crime. Statistics from the Chicago Police Department show that between 2019 and 2023, murder increased by 23%, robbery by 38%, theft by 41%, and motor vehicle theft by 227%.
The city's crime problem has been a major concern for residents and authorities alike. In response, CPD has implemented various initiatives, such as increased patrols and community policing efforts. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains a topic of debate.
The preparation for the DNC also includes heightened security measures. Police have denied permits for demonstrations near the United Center, where the convention will be held. This has sparked lawsuits and vows from groups to march regardless of whether they receive permits.
More than 50 organizations are planning to protest during the convention. The CPD has stated that it is fully prepared to handle any potential crowds and disturbances.
"Make no mistake, we are ready," said Superintendent Snelling at a news conference alongside U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.
However, some residents and activists have raised concerns about the city's ability to effectively manage the convention and address the ongoing crime crisis simultaneously. They argue that the focus on the DNC may divert resources and attention from other pressing issues in Chicago.
Despite the challenges, the CPD remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of both attendees and the city's residents during the Democratic National Convention.
