Columbia University Tightens Security with Lockdown to Prevent Disruptive Protests

Following antisemitic protests and barricades in the spring, Columbia University is implementing a lockdown to bar unauthorized individuals from campus, including those with malicious intent.

Columbia University in New York City is enacting a lockdown for the fall 2024 semester, restricting access to non-affiliates in response to antisemitic protests that culminated in a police raid on a barricaded building.

During demonstrations in April 2024, anti-Israel agitators vandalized property, blockaded entrances, and concealed their identities. Police arrested dozens of individuals, including non-students.

The university announced over the weekend that it will implement "orange rules," restricting campus access to individuals with university IDs or pre-registered guests. This measure aims to protect the community from potential disruptions at the start of the new school year.

According to the university's chief operating officer, Cas Holloway, the new rules are intended to keep the community safe. "We are particularly concerned about non-affiliates who may not have the best interests of the Columbia community in mind," he said.

Outdoor furniture and ropes have been placed at the front entrance of Hamilton Hall, where protesters had barricaded themselves in the spring. Campus entry is now limited to specific checkpoints at Broadway, Amsterdam Avenue, and other designated locations.

The university's website outlines four color-coded rules with varying degrees of public access to campus. Under green rules, the outdoor campus is open to all, but a university ID is required for building access.

The university has faced criticism for its handling of the spring protests, with some faculty members defending the agitators and blocking others from entering their encampment. Three senior staff members were removed over antisemitic text messages.

As the university prepares for the new semester, it is taking steps to strengthen its public safety capabilities and prevent disruptions that could jeopardize the well-being of its community.
