Daniel Romanchuk: Paralympic Champion Using Sports to Empower

Paralympic gold medalist Daniel Romanchuk has his sights set not only on bringing back more glory from Paris this summer but also on making a profound difference in the lives of others. Through his non-profit organization, Wheels for Change, Romanchuk aims to provide access to equipment for wheelchair racing enthusiasts in the US and internationally.

Daniel Romanchuk, the champion wheelchair racer who captured gold in the 400-meter T54 and bronze in the marathon T54 at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, is not merely content with his athletic achievements. He has embarked on a noble mission to transform the lives of aspiring wheelchair racers.

Inspired by his own experiences, Romanchuk recognized the significant financial burden associated with wheelchair racing. Unlike runners who can readily purchase running shoes, wheelchair racers require specialized equipment costing around $5,000, custom-built and with a lead time of up to two months.

To address this challenge, Romanchuk established Wheels for Change, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to equipment for wheelchair racers. In partnership with Clif Bar, the initiative aims to bridge the financial gap for aspiring athletes.

"There is a pretty big difference between your typical runner and wheelchair racer," Romanchuk explained. "For a wheelchair racer, it's a very different process."

Wheels for Change's initiatives include providing financial assistance for wheelchair purchases, loaning out chairs of various sizes while athletes raise funds, and creating educational videos to guide wheelchair racing techniques and equipment maintenance.

Romanchuk's passion for making a difference extends beyond his own organization. As part of Clif Corps' Athlete Coalition, he is supported by Clif Bar in his charitable endeavors, encouraging him to give back to his community.

"Clif has been super helpful," said Romanchuk. "They really encourage their athletes to give back to their communities, and they support us and help us do that as well."

Romanchuk aspires to expand the reach of Wheels for Change, envisioning a future where eight to 12 chairs are available for loan. The organization will also disseminate educational videos to empower wheelchair racers with training knowledge and equipment care.

The upcoming Paralympic Games in Paris, scheduled from August 28th to September 8th, will not only showcase Daniel Romanchuk's athletic prowess but also serve as a platform for him to amplify his mission. Through Wheels for Change, he will continue to inspire and empower wheelchair racers, breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity in sports.
