Despite his eventual success with "The X Files" and "Californication," David Duchovny faced numerous failed auditions early in his career, including all three male leads in the beloved '90s sitcom "Full House."

David Duchovny's rise to fame was not without its share of setbacks. The actor, who is now known for his iconic roles in "The X Files" and "Californication," faced a string of failed auditions during his early years in Hollywood. In a recent episode of his new podcast, "Fail Better," Duchovny opened up about the time he auditioned for and lost out on all three male leads in the beloved '90s sitcom "Full House."

"At first, they had me for, I think, the dad," Duchovny said, referencing Bob Saget's character, Danny Tanner. "And then, they had me for the [John] Stamos character. And then, they had me for the other guy (Dave Coulier's character, Joey Gladstone). I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to get one of these, and it’s going to change my life.'"

Despite his optimism, Duchovny's hopes of landing a role on "Full House" were dashed. He soon realized that his audition performances were falling short. "I was really bad at that kind of stuff," he explained. "I did not know how to do that sitcom stuff. I don’t know what they were thinking, that they thought I was going to exist in that world."

Duchovny's failed auditions were not isolated incidents. He went on to audition for numerous pilots and shows, with little success. "I can't tell you how many shows I didn't get," he said. Ultimately, he came to the realization that he simply wasn't the right fit for the roles he was auditioning for.

"I just needed to be able to pay my rent, too. That was an important thing because I just wanted a job," Duchovny said, reflecting on his early struggles. Despite his unyielding determination, the rejections began to take their toll. "I had plenty of those pilots that I went up for when I was first out in L.A. and I thought each one was going to be the break."

Despite his setbacks, Duchovny remained resilient. He continued to audition for roles, determined to find his niche in Hollywood. Eventually, his persistence paid off when he landed the role of Agent Fox Mulder in "The X Files." The show became a smash hit, catapulting Duchovny to stardom.

"Why am I making a podcast? The best answer I can come up with is that I feel like I’ve been failing my entire life, so I can speak from plenty of experience," the synopsis for his podcast reads. "Sure, I was on ‘The X Files’ and ‘Californication,’ I wrote some books and made some music. But I also got a literal F in ‘The New York Times.’"
