A Detroit block party took a deadly turn on Sunday, leaving two people dead and 19 others injured. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, has been described by Mayor Mike Duggan as "a level of violence that we rarely see anymore."

According to police, approximately 100 shell casings and nine guns were found at the scene of the shooting, including one with a Glock switch. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 27 and were struck by bullets around 2:25 a.m. in the Mohican Regent neighborhood.

One person remains in critical condition, while 17 other victims are expected to recover from their injuries. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said at a press conference on Monday that police are still investigating and no arrests have been made.

The shootings are the latest to strike Detroit in recent weeks, and have prompted police to launch a new Neighborhood Response Team to keep an eye out for illegal block parties. The team will consist of 80 officers who will be assigned to locate illegal block parties, issue warnings, and shut down events.

Mayor Duggan has also announced that party hosts and property owners, not partygoers, will be targeted by a new enforcement initiative. Parties contained inside houses and backyards do not need permits, but intentional preplanned events looking to attract people from miles away will not be tolerated.

Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield called Sunday's incident an "unspeakable tragedy" and said that "gun violence is an epidemic in Detroit and across the nation." U.S. Rep Rashida Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat, also took to social media to address the shooting, saying that "we owe it to our families to address this crisis with urgency."
