Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been wrongfully imprisoned in Moscow for over a year on baseless espionage charges. Despite international outcry and appeals from the U.S. government and his family, the Russian authorities continue to hold him in a notorious prison.
Evan Gershkovich, a 32-year-old American journalist working for the Wall Street Journal, has been unjustly detained in Moscow's Lefortovo Prison for 14 months. He was arrested on March 29, 2023, while on a reporting trip to Yekaterinburg, the fourth-largest city in Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry had accredited him to report in the country at the time.
The charges against Gershkovich, who is the American-born son of Soviet immigrants, are absurd. The U.S. government and Wall Street Journal have denounced them as baseless. President Biden has repeatedly called for Gershkovich's release, but to no avail. The journalist recently lost an appeal to end his pretrial detention and will remain behind bars until at least June.
Gershkovich's imprisonment has drawn widespread condemnation from journalists, human rights groups, and governments worldwide. The L.A. Press Club has awarded him the 2024 Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism, recognizing his unwavering dedication to truth and freedom of the press.
"It's hard to fathom that today marks 14 months since Evan was seized by authorities in Russia simply for doing his job as a journalist," said Grainne McCarthy, the Wall Street Journal's chief digital editor. "He cannot be released soon enough."
The Wall Street Journal has organized numerous events to keep Gershkovich in public consciousness. They have held barbecues, runs, social media storms, Read-A-Thons, and other efforts to raise awareness about his plight. The newspaper's corporate office has even added an "Evan burger" to its cafeteria menu featuring his favorite toppings.
Experts believe that the best hope for Gershkovich's release is a high-profile prisoner swap. The U.S. has been negotiating with Russia for the release of both Gershkovich and Paul Whelan, another American held in Russia on dubious charges.
While Gershkovich languishes in a Russian prison, his family and colleagues can only wait for the nightmare to end. They remain hopeful that he will be released soon and able to return to his work as a journalist.

"We hope this award brings hope and encouragement to Evan as he is awaiting justice," Pearl added. "And sends a strong message to the Russian Government that, despite attempts to disrupt world orders, the free world still holds the safety of journalists as a sanctuary of civilized society."
