Nathaniel McGuire, 20, was arrested after allegedly throwing a backpack containing an explosive device into the Santa Maria courthouse, injuring five people.
In a shocking incident that rocked the city of Santa Barbara, California, police have arrested a suspect for throwing an explosive device inside the city courthouse.
The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Nathaniel McGuire, was detained shortly after the incident on Wednesday. According to police, McGuire allegedly hurled his backpack into the courthouse, causing an explosion that injured five individuals.

"Immediately after throwing the backpack, McGuire ran to the southeast parking lot where he was detained by a court security officer, a Sheriff’s Deputy and CHP Officers as he tried to enter his red sedan," the Santa Barbara Police Department said in a statement.
McGuire, who was apprehended alone and wearing body armor underneath a jacket, did not sustain any physical injuries from the explosion. Police believe his motive for the attack stems from a previous arrest for possessing an unregistered firearm, for which he was scheduled to appear in court on the day of the incident.

Investigators are currently exploring possible links between McGuire and several recent arson fires in Santa Barbara. Search warrants have been obtained to examine his car and home for evidence.
McGuire has been booked at the Northern Branch Jail on multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, manufacturing an explosive device, and use of an explosive device for attempted murder.

While the investigation remains ongoing, authorities do not currently believe McGuire's actions were part of a broader conspiracy.
"Although this is an ongoing investigation and we are exploring all possible angles, at this point in time, we believe this to be a local incident committed by a local individual, with a local grievance stemming from his arrest," a police spokesperson stated.
They emphasized that there are no outstanding community safety concerns at this time, and that the situation has been resolved.
Of the five individuals injured in the explosion, none sustained life-threatening injuries. Four were transported to the hospital from the scene, while the fifth sought medical attention on their own. All victims were treated for injuries such as burns and have since been released from the hospital.
The incident has raised concerns about courthouse security and the potential for future attacks. Police are urging the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals to ensure the safety of the community.
