Fields Set to Start Again for Steelers as Wilson Remains Sidelined

Justin Fields is expected to make his third consecutive start at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers as Russell Wilson continues to recover from a calf injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced on Tuesday that Justin Fields will practice with the starting offense early in the week while Russell Wilson remains sidelined with a calf injury. The news comes as no surprise, as Fields has played well in Wilson's absence, leading the Steelers to a 2-0 start.

Tomlin emphasized that Fields will practice with the starters but declined to speculate on whether Fields has supplanted Wilson as the full-time starter. He stated that any such discussion is hypothetical at this point since Wilson is still unavailable.

Fields has impressed coaches and teammates with his mistake-free play and ability to extend plays with his legs. He has yet to throw an interception and has developed a strong connection with star wide receiver George Pickens.

Tomlin praised Fields' demeanor and leadership qualities, noting his "quiet confidence" and "clarity in communication." He also highlighted Fields' ability to motivate his teammates, recalling a moment during Sunday's victory over Denver when he asked Fields to deliver a pep talk to the offense.

While Wilson's return remains uncertain, the Steelers may get a boost on the offensive line with the potential return of left guard Isaac Seumalo, who has missed the first two games with a pectoral injury.

The Steelers will also focus on improving their penalty situation, as they have been penalized 19 times for 138 yards through two games. Tomlin confirmed that officials will be brought in to monitor practice this week to provide guidance to the team.

Second-year right tackle Broderick Jones, who was benched in favor of rookie Troy Fautanu during the last game, will be given an opportunity to rebound. Tomlin expressed confidence in Jones' talent and believes he will learn from his mistakes.

The Steelers will host the unbeaten Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, providing Fields with another chance to prove his worth as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
