Florida Transit Agency Aims to Save Lives with Narcan Kits

In a first for the state, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has equipped its bus terminals and is training staff to administer Narcan, a life-saving spray that reverses opioid overdoses.

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) in Florida has taken a significant step to address the opioid crisis by installing Narcan kits at its four bus terminals and training employees on how to use them. The initiative marks a first for any transit agency in the Sunshine State.

Recognizing the prevalence of opioid overdoses, PSTA saw a need to be equipped with resources to respond effectively in emergencies.

"We transport a lot of people every day, and we've seen situations where individuals become unresponsive," said Eddie Kester, PSTA's safety, security, and training supervisor. "We want to have the right tools for the job."

The agency partnered with Dan Zsido, a retired lieutenant with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, to lead the training program. Zsido, who spent four decades in law enforcement, emphasized the importance of Narcan in saving lives.

"This device, with a small amount of fluid, can make the difference between life and death," Zsido said. "It can reverse overdoses caused by heroin, prescription medications, and street drugs like fentanyl."

Pinellas County has witnessed a concerning rise in accidental opioid overdose deaths since 2018. The Narcan kits, installed in locations accessible only to PSTA staff, will provide a crucial resource for responding to overdoses on transit property.

The agency aims to inform the public about the availability of Narcan at its terminals, ensuring passengers have access to life-saving assistance in emergencies.

"We hope to serve as a model for other counties," Zsido said. "We're eager to save more lives with this initiative."
