Frankie Avalon's iconic performance as 'Teen Angel' in the beloved musical film 'Grease' nearly didn't happen. Avalon revealed on the 'Our Way with Paul Anka and Skip Bronson' podcast that he initially declined the role due to its resemblance to the legendary Elvis Presley.

"I saw the play and the character Teen Angel is all in black and he's got long sideburns — it’s Elvis. I'm not Elvis. I got my own style," Avalon recalled telling production executives.

However, producers were willing to accommodate Avalon's concerns and agreed to alter the character's appearance. "They said, 'Would you do it if we changed it?'[...] We started working on the thing. That's how I did the picture," Avalon explained.

Avalon's hesitation mirrors that of another 'Grease' star, Olivia Newton-John, who initially turned down the role of Sandy. Casting director Joel Thurm revealed that Newton-John was hesitant due to her dissatisfaction with her previous film 'Toomorrow.'

"She met John [Travolta] and she liked him. She also liked the role of Sandy, but she was really cautious," Thurm said. "She said, ‘All right, well, in that case, I’d like a screen test.’ That is the first and only time I’ve ever heard of an actor or actress asking for a screen test."

Despite their initial reluctance, both Avalon and Newton-John went on to become an integral part of the film's success. Avalon's 'Beauty School Dropout' performance has become an enduring classic, while Newton-John's Sandy Olsson is a beloved and iconic character.

The film, released in 1978, follows Sandy and Danny Zuko as they navigate the trials and tribulations of high school love. 'Grease' has remained a cultural phenomenon, beloved by generations for its catchy songs, memorable characters, and timeless story.

"Of all the films that I’ve made, I think the only film that has been outstanding in this world is ‘Grease’," Avalon said. "Huge all over the world. 'Beautiful School Dropout' and me coming down the stairs — around the world, they know that."
