Fresno State Football Coach Jeff Tedford Resigns Due to Health Concerns

Fresno State Bulldogs head coach Jeff Tedford has stepped down from his position citing health issues. The decision comes as a surprise as Tedford has been at the helm of the Bulldogs since 2017, leading them to a successful 44-22 record, two Mountain West Conference championships, and four bowl victories.

Fresno State University has announced that Jeff Tedford, the Bulldogs' head football coach, has stepped down effective immediately due to health concerns.

Tedford, 62, has steered the Bulldogs to a remarkable 44-22 record in his five seasons at Fresno State. His tenure has been marked by two Mountain West Conference championships and four bowl victories, including a 10-4 record during the 2022 season.

In a statement released on Monday, Tedford expressed his emotions regarding his decision: "It is with sad emotions that following my recent medical checkup, it has become clear that due to health concerns, my family and I have made the difficult decision to step aside as Fresno State's head coach."

He continued, "I want to thank Fresno State University, our athletic administration, our incredible coaching staff, and our remarkable student-athletes for the opportunity to lead this football program. The support and love we have received from the entire Bulldog Nation has meant the world to us."

Tedford's departure signals the end of a successful era for Fresno State football. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs have consistently been a force to be reckoned with in the Mountain West Conference. Tedford has a proven track record of developing talented players, as evidenced by the numerous conference and national awards earned by his student-athletes.

Fresno State athletic director Terry Tumey praised Tedford's contributions to the program: "Jeff Tedford has been an exceptional leader for Fresno State football. His passion, dedication, and commitment to our student-athletes have been evident every day. We are grateful for his service and wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

The Bulldogs will now turn to assistant head coach and linebackers coach Tim Skipper to lead the team on an interim basis. Skipper served as acting head coach during Tedford's absence for health reasons during the New Mexico Bowl, a game in which Fresno State secured a 37-10 victory over New Mexico State.

Tedford's resignation comes less than a year after he returned to Fresno State following a hiatus due to heart-related issues. His return marked a triumphant moment for both Tedford and the university, as he had previously guided the Bulldogs to a 12-win season and a school-record ranking in the Associated Press Top 25.

"Coach Tedford is a living legend," said Skipper. "He is definitely an innovator and trendsetter of the game. His impact on college football will be felt forever, and I feel very fortunate to be able to have coached on his staff these past two seasons. The knowledge I have gained is priceless."

As Fresno State prepares for the 2023 season, the university will conduct a national search for a new head football coach. The Bulldogs will look to build upon the legacy left by Jeff Tedford and continue their tradition of success in the Mountain West Conference and beyond.
