From Fashion Icon to First Lady: Melania Trump's Journey

Former first lady Melania Trump reflects on her modeling career, American citizenship, motherhood, and her relationship with former President Donald Trump in an exclusive interview with 'Fox & Friends.'

As a young woman from Slovenia, Melania Trump embarked on a modeling career in the United States in 1996. The glamorous world of fashion proved to be a crucible that forged her resilience and prepared her for the unexpected role she would later play on the global stage.

"The fashion industry is glamorous, but it's also tough," Melania told "Fox & Friends." "Everybody judges you, looks at you a certain way. So it can be a mean world as well."

This experience, she believes, gave her a thick skin and prepared her for the intense scrutiny she would face as first lady.

In 2006, Melania became a U.S. citizen, a moment she described as a "very, very proud" one. She had come a long way from her humble beginnings, and her American citizenship symbolized her embrace of a new chapter in her life.

"I was very proud. I went through the process and that day was a big celebration," she said.

Through the world of fashion, Melania crossed paths with Donald Trump. Their connection was instantaneous, and they began dating in 1998.

Melania recounted that Donald never formally hinted at a future presidential bid, but his keen interest in politics was evident.

"He was very in tune [with] what's going on in the world and especially in this country," she said.

After six years of dating, the couple got engaged in 2004 and married in 2005. A year later, they welcomed their son, Barron Trump.

"It was an exciting day. A busy, busy day, as every bride you want to make sure everything goes smoothly," Melania said of her wedding day.

Melania described Barron as an "incredible young man" who is now pursuing a degree at New York University's Stern School of Business.

"His strength. His intelligence. His knowledge, his kindness. It's admirable," she said.

While Donald encouraged her to have more children, Melania felt content with one. She explained that their busy lives made it a practical decision.

"I'm completely fine with one because it's a very busy life. And I know how busy [Donald] is. And, I'm in charge of everything," she said.

As a stepmother to Donald's four children from previous marriages, Melania emphasized the importance of respecting individuality within a blended family.

"You cannot control anyone. You could control only your own behavior, your own words. Everybody is in control of [his or her] own self," she said.

"Once you lead your life with respect and love that's all [that] matters."

Melania's journey from model to first lady has been an extraordinary one. Her memoir, "Melania," provides a glimpse into her life as a public figure and a private person.

Reflecting on her time in the White House, Melania expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve.

"It was an honor for me to serve this great country as a first lady," she said. "I will always cherish the time we spent together."
