Gold mining is an inherently dangerous endeavor, but even seasoned prospectors like Todd Hoffman have encountered situations that test their limits. Known for his exploits in the popular Discovery show "Gold Rush," Hoffman recently opened up about a particularly perilous incident that unfolded while he was working in the jungle of Guyana.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Hoffman vividly recalled the moment when he was pursued by a group of armed men who were determined to seize a substantial amount of cash he was carrying. "I got chased around Georgetown, Guyana, when I was in the jungle by a whole car full of guys with guns," Hoffman recounted. "I just come from the bank and I had two backpacks full of cash."

The value of the cash, totaling over $2.5 million in Guyanese currency, made it a tempting target for the armed pursuers. As Hoffman attempted to escape in a car, the men relentlessly pursued, brandishing their weapons out the window.

"Once I got in the car, they're right on us," Hoffman said. "They were holding their guns out the window. They hadn't started shooting at us yet, but I said, 'Open the windows. We're going to throw the cash out the window.'"

In a scene reminiscent of a high-octane action movie, Hoffman and his driver engaged in a perilous car chase with the armed men. "We got in this car chase like you'd see in the movies, man," Hoffman continued. "And I said, 'Once we get stuck, I'm throwing the cash out and everybody just lay down. We're going to throw the cash out.'"

Despite the terrifying situation, Hoffman's driver, Vicky, managed to outmaneuver the pursuers, dodging their attempts to block their path. "Vicky got us away," Hoffman recalled. "Vicky somehow busted a right, busted a left, busted a right and then somehow they got stuck and we got away. And then we went into this guy's garage. We put the car in there because they were roaming around."

The incident left an indelible mark on Hoffman, who admitted that he had never been closer to being shot or killed. "That was probably the closest I came to probably getting shot and dying," he said.

Hoffman's unwavering determination to pursue gold mining, despite the inherent dangers, is evident in his decision to continue working in Guyana after the harrowing car chase. "We would almost die there probably once a week. Somebody would almost die," he said. "That was years ago when we were mining in the jungle."

However, the most extreme encounters and near-death experiences that Hoffman faced during his time in the jungle were not captured on camera for "Gold Rush." "The things I did in the jungle were just – they didn't put them on camera because it was too freaky," he said. "It was like sad, like dangerous sad."

Apart from the physical risks involved in gold mining, Hoffman also emphasized the complexities of running a family-run business and navigating the bureaucracy of government regulations. Yet, it is the actual mining process that poses the greatest challenges.

"I think the biggest challenge is just putting it all together and then trying to get down into that gold," Hoffman explained. "You're on properties that have been mined for 110 years, 120 years. And so you're trying to find the gold that the other guys didn't get, the old-timers didn't get. So, usually it's harder."

Hoffman's excavations have unearthed a wide range of unusual artifacts, including frozen ground squirrels, caribou antlers, and even fossilized trees from warmer climates, providing glimpses into the region's geological and climatic history.

After departing from "Gold Rush" in 2018, Hoffman launched his own spin-off series, "Hoffman Family Gold," which premiered in 2022. The show features Hoffman, his father Jack, and son Hunter, as they embark on a gold-mining venture 80 miles north of Nome, Alaska.

The upcoming third season of "Hoffman Family Gold" will mark the final one for the Hoffman patriarch, Jack, who has decided to retire from gold mining. Jack's departure from the show will leave a void, as he has become a fan favorite with his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering determination.

Despite the challenges and dangers, Hoffman's passion for gold mining remains unyielding. His experiences in the unforgiving jungles and frozen landscapes of Alaska and Guyana have shaped his life and solidified his legacy as one of the most renowned gold prospectors of our time.
