A recent case in Texas has brought these concerns into sharp focus. On May 25, authorities in Splendora, Texas, arrested an international fugitive wanted for murder. Leo Acosta Sanchez, 21, had been living illegally in the U.S. for several months before her arrest.
Sanchez entered the United States on a nonimmigrant visa in August 2023 but overstayed her allotted time. She was living in Splendora but frequently traveled to Terrenos, a residential community outside Houston.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Sanchez is originally from Mexico. She faces charges for her alleged crimes committed outside the United States.
The arrest of Sanchez underscores the growing problem of illegal immigrants committing crimes in the U.S. In the past year, ICE has arrested over 120,000 non-citizens for a variety of offenses, including murder, assault, and drug trafficking.
The Biden administration's policies have exacerbated the border crisis, making it easier for criminals to enter the U.S. illegally. The administration has halted construction on the border wall, canceled the Remain in Mexico program, and weakened enforcement of immigration laws.
As a result, the number of illegal crossings has soared to unprecedented levels. In April 2023, over 234,000 illegal immigrants were apprehended at the southern border, a 22% increase from the previous month.
The Biden administration must take immediate action to secure the border and address the national security concerns posed by illegal immigration. This includes increasing border patrol agents, completing the border wall, and reinstating the Remain in Mexico program.
