Georgia School Shooting Prosecutor Receives Guidance from Pioneer in Trying Parents of Mass Shooters

The prosecutor behind the historic conviction of parents associated with a mass shooting provides advice to her counterpart handling a similar case in Georgia, emphasizing the complexities of such trials and the need for courage in pursuing justice.

Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald, who broke new ground in successfully prosecuting the parents of a mass shooter, has offered invaluable advice to the prosecutor handling the Apalachee High School shooting in Georgia. The tragic incident, which claimed the lives of four people and injured nine others, shares striking similarities with the Oxford High School shooting in November 2021, where McDonald's expertise was instrumental in convicting the parents of shooter Ethan Crumbley.

McDonald's counsel revolves around the inherent challenges in securing convictions in such cases, emphasizing the rarity and gravity of charging parents for their children's actions. "It's not easy to obtain a conviction on [this set of] facts," McDonald stated to FOX 2 Detroit. "It's a gross negligence standard for involuntary manslaughter in Michigan, and it shouldn't be easy. It should be rare – very rare."

Despite the lack of widespread support for the charges initially announced, McDonald's conviction of Ethan's parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, demonstrated the significance of holding parents accountable for their children's actions when they contribute to foreseeable harm. "I knew looking at all the evidence that we had, that is not released to the public, I knew that you don’t get to walk away from that sort of egregious behavior when it was reasonably foreseeable that your kid was going to hurt himself or somebody else," McDonald explained.

The prosecutor encouraged the Apalachee shooting trial prosecutors to be resolute and courageous in their pursuit of justice. "Do the right thing and have courage," McDonald advised. The charges against Colt Gray, the 14-year-old alleged shooter, include four counts of felony murder. His father, Colin Gray, faces four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children.
