Former NYPD inspector Paul Mauro joined Americas Newsroom to discuss the latest evidence against Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann, who is now facing a fourth count.

Heuermann was initially charged with the murders of four women whose bodies were found along Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach, New York. However, investigators have since uncovered additional evidence linking him to the disappearance of two other women.

As a result, Heuermann has now been charged with a fourth count of murder in the death of Valerie Mack, whose body was found in December 2020.

Mauro said the new evidence against Heuermann is "very strong" and includes DNA evidence and cell phone records.

"This is a very strong case," Mauro said. "The DNA evidence is very strong. The cell phone records are very strong. I think the prosecution has a very good chance of convicting him."

Mauro also said that he believes Heuermann is responsible for the deaths of additional women who have not yet been identified.

"I think there are more victims out there," Mauro said. "I think he's a serial killer. I think he's responsible for the deaths of other women."

The Gilgo Beach murders have been a mystery for years. The bodies of the four women were found along Ocean Parkway between 2010 and 2011. Investigators initially believed the women were victims of a serial killer, but they were unable to identify a suspect.

In 2020, Heuermann was arrested in connection with the murders. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The trial for Heuermann's first four murder charges is scheduled to begin in September. It is unclear when he will face trial on the new murder charge.

The Gilgo Beach murders have been a source of great pain for the families of the victims. They have waited years for justice, and they are now hopeful that Heuermann will be convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

"We want justice," said the mother of one of the victims. "We want him to pay for what he did."
