House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) has sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, demanding that the Justice Department (DOJ) "take immediate action" to prosecute former Trump attorney Michael Cohen for perjury, false statements, and theft. The letter alleges that Cohen has repeatedly lied to Congress and, during his testimony in the recent criminal trial against former President Trump, admitted to stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the Trump Organization.
Emmer cites Cohen's previous guilty plea to lying to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence in 2018 and three subsequent criminal referrals from congressional committees, including the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the House Committee on the Judiciary.
In particular, Emmer highlights Cohen's testimony before the House Oversight Committee in 2019, where he denied seeking employment in the Trump White House despite evidence suggesting otherwise. During the NY v. Trump criminal trial, a witness confirmed Cohen's "rage" over not receiving a job in the administration.
Emmer also criticizes Cohen's admission on the stand to stealing from the Trump Organization, noting that this felony is more serious than the charges Trump faces in the NY v. Trump case.
The letter also raises concerns about Matthew Colangelo, a top prosecutor on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's team, who previously held senior roles in the Biden administration's Justice Department. Emmer alleges that Colangelo's position as a former DOJ official creates the appearance of collusion between the Biden administration and the Manhattan District Attorney's office in the case against Trump.
Emmer demands that the DOJ investigate Cohen's alleged crimes, provide documents related to Colangelo's employment, and explain why charges have not yet been filed against Cohen despite multiple criminal referrals.
Emmer told Fox News Digital that Cohen is "not only a liar and a thief, he's the only person guilty of a crime in Alvin Bragg's witch hunt against President Trump." He vowed to continue holding the Biden administration accountable until Cohen is prosecuted and Americans receive answers about the case against Trump.
