Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch expresses caution over President Biden's proposals for significant changes to the nation's highest court, emphasizing the importance of an independent judiciary.

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch has expressed reservations regarding President Biden's proposed overhauls to the Supreme Court, urging caution in the pursuit of radical changes. During an appearance on 'Fox News Sunday,' Gorsuch declined to elaborate on Biden's specific suggestions but stressed the critical role of an impartial judiciary.

"It's there for the moments when the spotlight's on you, when the government's coming after you. And don't you want a ferociously independent judge and a jury of your peers to make those decisions? Isn't that your right as an American?" Gorsuch asserted. "And so I just say, be careful."

Biden and Vice President Harris have advocated for Congressional action to impose term limits and a code of conduct on the Supreme Court, as well as restrictions on presidential immunity. Gorsuch declined to directly address these proposals but emphasized the importance of maintaining an independent judicial branch.

In a separate segment of the interview, Gorsuch expressed concerns about the proliferation of laws in the United States, arguing that the sheer volume had led to unintended consequences for individuals and the government alike. He emphasized the need for balance between the protection of rights and the avoidance of excessive legislation.

"As a judge now for 18 years, I just came to see case after case in which ordinary Americans just trying to live their lives, not hurt anybody, raise their families, were just getting whacked by laws unexpectedly," Gorsuch said.

Gorsuch illustrated his point by citing issues with information provided by the IRS hotline, highlighting the complexity of the tax code as a contributing factor. He stressed the importance of clear and accessible laws to ensure compliance and fairness.

Regarding potential conflicts between different branches of government, Gorsuch emphasized the Constitution as the ultimate arbiter. "The answer, is the Constitution," he said, underscoring the need for adherence to established principles.

Gorsuch also encouraged a sense of trust among Americans and advocated for finding common ground despite differences. "My good friend [retired Justice] Stephen Breyer says, ‘If I listen to almost anyone talk for long enough, I’m gonna find something they say that we can agree on,'" Gorsuch said. "Maybe we should start there."
