The university announced Long’s passing, with Curtis Frye, a former track coach for the Gamecocks who was a close friend of Long’s, informing the university after speaking with Long’s wife. A cause of death was not disclosed.

Long, a native of Clinton, South Carolina, emerged as a star running back for South Carolina in 1975. He became the first South Carolina running back to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season, and he had six games where he rushed for more than 100 yards.

In 1977, the New York Jets selected Long in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. He was part of the same draft class as Hall of Famer Joe Klecko and Wesley Walker. Long started in four of the 14 games he appeared in for the Jets during his rookie season.

He had a breakout season in his sophomore campaign, rushing for 954 yards and 10 touchdowns. He finished his time in the NFL with 2,190 rushing yards and 25 rushing touchdowns, all with the Jets from 1977 to 1981.

After his NFL career, Long joined the United States Football League in 1983. He played for the Chicago Blitz, Arizona Wranglers, and Arizona Outlaws.

Long is survived by his wife, Frankie, their four children, and six grandchildren, according to FOX 57.

Long’s passing leaves a void in the South Carolina football community. He was a beloved figure who will be remembered for his outstanding achievements on the field and his dedication to the game. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Gamecocks.

In recognition of Long’s contributions to South Carolina football, the university plans to honor him during its upcoming home game against Georgia State on September 16th. Long’s jersey will be retired, and a special ceremony will be held in his honor.
