South Korea's Minister of Science and ICT, Lee Jong-Ho, has stressed the importance of international cooperation for the successful development of artificial intelligence (AI). During a recent interview with Reuters, Minister Lee emphasized the essential role of collaboration in shaping the future of AI.

The AI Global Forum held in Seoul, co-hosted with Britain, served as a platform for addressing concerns surrounding AI, including job security, copyright, and inequality. Minister Lee lauded the event for advancing discussions on AI safety and introducing additional themes of innovation and inclusivity. He expressed optimism that future summits would prioritize collaborations on AI safety institutes.

The Seoul summit builds upon the first global AI summit held in Britain in November. France is expected to host the next in-person gathering in 2025. The forum offered an avenue for officials from multiple countries to explore cooperation between state-backed AI safety institutes.

Experts welcomed the progress made in regulating AI technology but emphasized the need for enforceable rules. Francine Bennett, Director of the AI-focused Ada Lovelace Institute, underscored the importance of involving those affected by AI in the rule-making process through governments. Max Tegmark, President of the Future of Life Institute, advocated for mandatory safety standards for AI services before their market release.

Minister Lee acknowledged the challenges of keeping laws abreast of rapid technological advancements like AI. However, he maintained the necessity of flexible regulations to ensure public safety while fostering innovation.

The Seoul summit served as a catalyst for global cooperation on AI development. The insights and commitments gathered during the event set the stage for future collaborations and the continued pursuit of a safe and inclusive AI future.
