Jalen Hurts and Eagles Soar Through Smooth Start in Moore's Offense

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has impressed in the early days of training camp under new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, showcasing improved execution, decision-making, and comfort with the new scheme.

In the wake of a disappointing end to their 2022 season, the Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Jalen Hurts are determined to turn the page. Six months after an inexplicable 1-6 finish, the team is off to a promising start under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Moore, the fourth different offensive coordinator Hurts has had in his five NFL seasons, has been tasked with reinvigorating the quarterback's comfort level and erasing the "staleness" of the previous offense. Moore's scheme brings significant changes, with an emphasis on pre-snap motion, quicker decisions, and a multifaceted attack that aims to keep defenses guessing.

For Hurts, these changes have been warmly embraced. He has welcomed the addition of running back Saquon Barkley, who adds a versatile dimension to the team's run-pass option (RPO) attack. Hurts has also embraced the "2.3-second rule," which ensures that plays develop swiftly and seamlessly.

Perhaps most notably, the offense will feature significantly more pre-snap motion than ever before. Last season, the Eagles had the lowest pre-snap motion rate in the NFL (10.9%). Moore's offense, in contrast, used motion 25.9% of the time with the Los Angeles Chargers last season. While some of this motion may seem subtle, it is designed to make the offense less predictable. It also aims to reduce the frequency of blitzes, a defensive strategy that posed challenges for Hurts in the past.

Moore has sought input from Hurts in crafting the new offense, aiming to blend elements that cater to the quarterback's strengths. Hurts is highly regarded for his ability to run off RPOs, make quick decisions, and extend plays when necessary. Moore's scheme provides a framework that complements these attributes.

Despite posting solid numbers in 2022 (3,858 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, 605 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns), Hurts struggled in the final seven games, throwing five interceptions. The once-dominant Eagles offense failed to top 20 points in that stretch, culminating in a humiliating playoff loss to Tampa Bay.

Hurt acknowledges the frustration he experienced during that period, but he believes that the changes implemented by Moore will help him and the offense regain their previous effectiveness.

"I think it's as simple as: If I made it happen, I can make it happen," Hurts said. "This team has made it happen before. There's no doubt that we can make it happen again."

Moore's influence extends beyond the scheme itself. He has taken on a significant leadership role, leaving head coach Nick Sirianni to focus on other aspects of the team. This has fostered a more collaborative environment where Hurts feels heard and respected.

As the Eagles continue their preparations for the upcoming season, they are optimistic about the strides made under Moore. Hurts' improved play and the team's collective determination are indications that they are ready to put the struggles of last season behind them. Only time will tell whether the Eagles can sustain their momentum and achieve the success they are capable of.
