Two-time major champion Jon Rahm has put forth a proposal for a significant change to the selection process for golfers participating in the Olympics. Currently, golfers are chosen based on their position in the world golf rankings, but Rahm believes each country should be given the freedom to select their own representatives for the Summer Games.

In the days leading up to the opening round of the men's tournament at the Paris Olympics, Rahm outlined his alternative format for selecting golfers. He drew a comparison to the Team USA Basketball team, which is free to choose its roster without regard to individual player rankings.

"There needs to be some guidelines," Rahm told reporters. "But, like, Team USA Basketball (is) free to choose whoever they want."

Rahm's proposal stems from concerns about the current Olympic qualifying process, which has come under scrutiny in recent years. Earlier this year, some players who competed on the LIV Golf circuit were not considered for the Summer Games because LIV's tournaments are not recognized by the world rankings.

Seven LIV players, including Rahm, ultimately made the trip to France for this year's Olympics, but others, such as Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, were not selected.

"I think you need to let each country choose who they want to play," Rahm asserted.

The Olympic golf qualifying process has been a topic of debate since golf was added to the Olympic program for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. More than a century passed without golf being included in the Summer Games before it was reinstated eight years ago.

While Rahm primarily focuses on changing the golfer selection process, he also believes the Olympic golf format could benefit from the addition of "some team aspect."

"That would be extremely nice to share the stage with another player," Rahm said, "to do something different."

Rahm's proposal has sparked discussion among the golfing community, with some expressing support for his ideas and others expressing skepticism. Ultimately, the decision on whether to implement changes to the Olympic golfer selection process lies with the International Golf Federation (IGF).

It remains to be seen whether the IGF will adopt Rahm's suggestions, but his proposal has certainly brought the issue of Olympic golfer selection back into the spotlight.
