50-year-old actress Kate Beckinsale is not taking any criticism regarding her appearance. The "Underworld" star recently posted several clips of herself dancing to All Saints' "Never Ever" on Instagram, prompting some users to comment on her slim figure.
However, Beckinsale swiftly responded to the negative comments, revealing that she has been coping with several personal losses and health concerns. She explained that she nursed her stepfather to his death earlier this year, while also adjusting to the recent loss of her father, who passed away when she was a child.
In addition, Beckinsale shared that she had experienced a severe flare-up of her mast cell disease, which is often triggered by stress and grief. She revealed that the condition had caused her to vomit blood and spend six weeks in the hospital due to a Mallory-Weiss tear.
"That's what I am prepared to disclose that has contributed to some weight loss," she stated. "What you think of my appearance and how I should look, independently of any circumstances in my life and my family's is not important."
Beckinsale urged the critics to focus less on her appearance and more on being respectful of others' circumstances. "I am trying to survive what feel like unbearable losses, reactivated PTSD from discovering my very young father's almost dead body as a very young child alone in the night, and working to support the family I have left," she stated.
She continued, "Do better."
In response to another comment suggesting that she was too thin and needed to eat something, Beckinsale simply replied, "Enough."
Earlier this year, Beckinsale revealed that she had been hospitalized, sharing photos of herself in a hospital gown on Instagram. She has since deleted those pictures.
The actress made her first public appearance since her hospitalization at the inaugural King's Trust Gala in New York City, where she spoke to People magazine about the challenges she has faced.
"Because my parents have both been unwell and my cat... it's been a bunch of things. So that's why it's nice to come and see friends and have a little perspective. Everyone's had a bit of a rough year, I think," she said.
Beckinsale's decision to speak out against body-shaming has been met with support from many of her fans and fellow celebrities.
