Costner, 69, brought his children Grace, 13, Hayes, 15, Cayden, 17, Lily, 37, and Annie, 40, to the festival, where they proudly posed together for the cameras. The boys sported black tuxedos, while the girls opted for summer dresses in shades of blue.

After the premiere, Costner became visibly emotional as he sat with his children and received a nearly 10-minute standing ovation. The actor plays a character named Hayes Ellison in the film and revealed that he asked his son Hayes to take on a small role.

"It's a devastating moment. It's a moment you never want to have to experience, but the choice that he makes will put a lump in your throat when you see what he does," Costner said of his son's role.

While the premiere was a formal affair, the Costner family also had their share of lighthearted moments. Costner joked to Jimmy Kimmel that his sons went fishing while his daughters enjoyed drinks on a boat until late.

"They cruised in about 8 o'clock at night," Costner said. "I said, 'We came to France to be as a family,' and they go, 'It's working great, Dad. What do we do next?' I said, 'I don't know. We need a tour director to figure that out.'"

"Horizon" was a passion project for Costner, who revealed that he self-financed some of the film's production. He spent years trying to get the movie made and ultimately invested $38 million of his own money.

Costner's commitment to "Horizon" led him to make a difficult decision about his role in the hit TV series "Yellowstone." He agreed to leave the show due to scheduling conflicts with the film's production.

Despite his dedication, Costner faced skepticism from potential investors about the feasibility of "Horizon." "I've knocked on every boat in Cannes to help me," he said at the festival. "I don't know why it was so hard to get people to believe in the movie that I wanted to make."

Ultimately, Costner's perseverance paid off, and he was thrilled to share the Cannes experience with his children. "I wanted them to see me work. I got them tuxedos, bought them dresses," he told Kimmel.

The actor's children also expressed their admiration for their father's work. "My whole life, he has been like, 'Follow your dreams. You can do it,'" Lily Costner told GQ. "I think it's really moving to see him go out and bet on himself."
