Legendary college football coach Lou Holtz has raised serious questions about the Secret Service's handling of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, calling it a "screw up."

"How in the hell did that happen?" Holtz exclaimed during an interview with OutKick's Dan Dakich. "There had to be some kind of [Secret Service] mistake. ... Consider this: He was shot and only by the grace of God was he not killed, but do you know what kind of screw up happened? Who's running the [Secret Service/law enforcement] asylum?"

Holtz's comments come just four days after 20-year-old Thomas Crooks grazed former President Trump's ear from a rifle shot during an outdoor campaign appearance in Butler, Pennsylvania. While Holtz condemned the assassination attempt, he does not believe there was a grand conspiracy.

"If you were doing it intentionally, you couldn't have screwed it up anymore in this world," he said.

Holtz believes that recent comments from President Biden and some in the media have created a hostile climate that may have contributed to the assassination attempt. Biden had said that Trump had a "bull's-eye" on him, while some media outlets have compared Trump to Adolph Hitler.

"You can't trust the media. Everyone has their own agenda, and they try to push it," Holtz said. "I don't worry about being politically correct, I just worry about being correct, and that's far more important along the line. But I don't think we seem to feel that way anymore."

Holtz, who used to be a Democrat, lamented the changing nature of society and party lines. He said that in the past, "society didn't have a problem, just a disagreement" and that politicians on both sides of the aisle "wanted to keep you safe, wanted to give you a chance to succeed and to raise your family in a proper way." However, "that doesn't exist anymore," he said.

Holtz's comments have sparked a debate about the role of the Secret Service and the responsibility of the media. Many agree with Holtz that the Secret Service needs to be held accountable for the security lapses that allowed Crooks to get close enough to Trump to shoot him. Others argue that the media needs to be more responsible in their language and avoid fueling division and violence.
