United were without Cristiano Ronaldo, who was ruled out with a hip flexor injury, and their lack of attacking threat was evident from the start. Tottenham took the lead in the 12th minute when Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot after Luke Shaw had brought down Son Heung-min.

United had a chance to equalize in the 25th minute when Fred found himself through on goal, but the Brazilian dragged his shot wide. Tottenham doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Son scored a superb goal from outside the area.

United were booed off at half-time and their misery was compounded in the 57th minute when Fernandes was sent off for a second bookable offense. Tottenham made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute when Kane scored his second goal of the game from close range.

The result was United's worst home defeat since 1989 and leaves them with a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the Champions League.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was bitterly disappointed with his team's performance.

"We were not good enough today," he said. "We didn't create enough chances and we didn't defend well enough. We need to improve a lot if we want to challenge for the title."

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte was delighted with his team's performance.

"We played a great game," he said. "We were aggressive and we created a lot of chances. We deserved to win."

Manchester United's defeat was a major setback for Solskjaer. The team has now lost four of their last six Premier League games and they are in danger of missing out on the Champions League.

United's lack of attacking threat was a major problem against Tottenham. The team created very few chances and they were unable to capitalize on the few chances they did create.

Tottenham, on the other hand, were excellent. They were aggressive and they created a lot of chances. Kane and Son were in excellent form and they were a constant threat to the United defense.

The result leaves United with a lot to ponder. The team needs to improve a lot if they want to challenge for the title.
