A Texas police chief is in critical condition after being shot during a traffic stop, and authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspect.
LUBBOCK, Texas – A manhunt is underway in Lubbock, Texas, after a police chief was shot and critically injured during a traffic stop on Saturday night.
Police Chief Floyd Mitchell was conducting a routine traffic stop around 8:45 p.m. in the 2300 block of Avenue Q when the suspect, identified as David Wilson, allegedly opened fire. Chief Mitchell was struck multiple times and taken to University Medical Center in critical condition.
Manhunt Launched After Texas Police Chief Shot
Wilson fled the scene on foot and remains at large. He is described as a white male in his early 30s, approximately 5'10" tall and weighing around 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a dark hoodie and jeans.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Mitchell and his family at this time," said Lubbock Police Department spokesman Lt. Ray Mendez. "We are doing everything we can to apprehend the suspect and bring him to justice."
Authorities have set up a large perimeter around the scene of the shooting and are conducting a thorough search. Residents in the area are urged to stay indoors and call 911 if they see anything suspicious.
"We need the public's help in finding this suspect," said Mendez. "If you have any information, please do not hesitate to contact us."
Chief Mitchell, 45, has been with the Lubbock Police Department for over 20 years. He has served as chief since 2017. He is a well-respected law enforcement officer and community leader.
"Chief Mitchell is a devoted public servant who has dedicated his life to protecting our community," said Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope. "We are all praying for his recovery."
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the Lubbock community. Residents are expressing their support for Chief Mitchell and his family, and their outrage over the senseless violence.
"This is a cowardly act against one of our finest officers," said Lubbock resident Sarah Jones. "We will not tolerate this violence in our city."
