During an appearance on Kelly Ripa's podcast, "Let's Talk Off Camera," in April 2023, McConaughey hinted at the possibility of a familial connection between him and Harrelson.
"Where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line," McConaughey said. He revealed that family members had mistaken photos of Harrelson for him, and vice versa.
McConaughey went on to share that during a family vacation, his mother had mentioned knowing Harrelson's father in the past. After some investigation, they discovered that Harrelson's father had been on leave from the military at the same time that McConaughey's parents were going through a divorce.
Harrelson confirmed the theory in a May 2023 interview, revealing that McConaughey's father had refused to go to the hospital with his mother when McConaughey was born, telling her, "that ain't my son."
The "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" actor has expressed his desire to have a DNA test to confirm whether he and McConaughey are related. However, McConaughey has been hesitant to do so, fearing that it could disrupt his relationship with his father.
