Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons, one of the NFL's most dominant defensive players, may consider a move to his home state if he does not reach a long-term deal with the Cowboys.
Micah Parsons, the Dallas Cowboys' defensive cornerstone and three-time Pro Bowler, is in a precarious position. The team has a limited window to secure his long-term services, and if they fail to do so, he could potentially leave the Lone Star State.
Parsons has emerged as one of the most dynamic and disruptive pass rushers in the NFL. Drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2021 draft, the former Penn State standout has already amassed 40.5 regular season sacks, including a career-high 14 in 2023.
His exceptional play has earned him a place among the league's elite players, and he could command a historic salary if he hits the open market after the 2025 season. Currently, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson holds the distinction of being the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL, with a $140 million contract that includes $110 million guaranteed.
Reports indicate that Parsons could surpass Jefferson's deal and become the NFL's highest-paid defender. However, there is no indication that he is seeking a trade anytime soon.
Despite his contentment in Dallas, Parsons has acknowledged that if he were to leave the Cowboys, he would be open to playing in his home state of Pennsylvania.
"If I hypothetically did go home later in my career it would be to join the Pittsburgh Steelers," Parsons told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
The Steelers, led by respected head coach Mike Tomlin, would be an intriguing destination for Parsons. He has expressed admiration for Tomlin's leadership, and he could form a formidable defensive tandem with reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year TJ Watt.
While Parsons' departure from the Cowboys is far from certain, it remains a possibility. The team has other key players whose contracts expire in the coming years, including quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Prescott, who led the NFL in touchdown passes last season, is entering the final year of his contract in 2024. Lamb, one of the most promising young receivers in the league, is also in the final year of his deal.
The Cowboys face a challenging task in balancing their finances and retaining their top players. If they fail to extend Parsons' contract, they could lose one of the most impactful defensive players in the NFL.
The Steelers, with their strong defense and loyal fan base, would be a tempting option for Parsons if he decides to leave Dallas. However, for now, he remains a Cowboy and is focused on helping the team reach the Super Bowl.
