Prosecutors have alleged that Gregg sent text messages to her stepfather, Heath Smylie, in an attempt to lure him home and ambush him. When Heath Smylie arrived and opened the kitchen door, a gun in Gregg's possession discharged, striking him in the shoulder.

Gregg, who was charged as an adult, rejected a plea deal that would have resulted in a 40-year prison sentence. Her defense team has entered an insanity plea on her behalf.
