Moore's Future Uncertain as Michigan's Head Coach

Despite leading the Wolverines to a season-opening victory, Sherrone Moore remains unsigned, leaving his long-term status in limbo.

The Michigan Wolverines' victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs last week marked the official start of the Sherrone Moore era – at least on paper. However, a lingering uncertainty surrounds Moore's long-term status as the team's head coach, as he has yet to sign a contract with the university.

According to USA Today, Moore was announced as the successor to former head coach Jim Harbaugh in January, with a memorandum of understanding contingent on a full employment agreement within 90 days. That deadline has passed without an agreement.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel provided an update on Moore's status, stating that the contracts were being worked on and that he had already signed contracts with several assistant coaches. He emphasized the time-consuming nature of contract negotiations, particularly given the recent coaching transitions in football and basketball, as well as ongoing NCAA matters and a change in apparel provider.

Manuel expressed confidence in Moore's understanding of the university's commitment to him and vice versa, suggesting optimism for an eventual deal.

Moore's tenure as acting coach for Michigan last season, when he filled in for Harbaugh during multiple suspensions, included a suspension related to the NCAA's investigation into the Wolverines' alleged sign-stealing scheme.

Moore has been a member of Michigan's coaching staff since 2018, holding various roles including tight ends coach, co-offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and most recently, offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and acting head coach.

The Wolverines' next challenge will be a home matchup against the No. 3 Texas Longhorns, who were also a part of last season's College Football Playoff. This crucial game will provide Moore with an opportunity to further prove his abilities as Michigan's head coach, while the university continues to navigate the contract negotiations.

As the season progresses, the question of Moore's long-term future with Michigan will continue to loom, potentially casting a shadow over the team's performance and morale. The university and Moore must strive to resolve this matter promptly to provide stability and clarity for the program and its fans.
