A 46-year-old woman was shot dead in broad daylight in Manhattan by her former mother-in-law, who then turned the gun on herself. The victim had filed multiple reports of domestic disputes with the NYPD.

A shocking murder-suicide has occurred near Mayor Eric Adams' mansion in Manhattan, leaving two people dead and a young child orphaned.

On Friday morning, 46-year-old Marisa Galloway was shot multiple times in the head and back on a quiet street in the Upper East Side neighborhood. The suspect, 66-year-old Kathleen Leigh, then killed herself with the same gun.

Surveillance video captured the horrific attack, which unfolded just steps from Gracie Mansion, the mayor's official residence. In the video, Galloway is seen placing her 1-year-old child in a car seat before she is approached by Leigh, who opens fire without warning.

Police recovered two pistols at the scene, one of which Leigh dropped after shooting herself. The other was found in a tote bag she was carrying.

According to police, Galloway and Leigh had a history of domestic disputes, stemming from custody arrangements for Leigh's 4-year-old grandson, Galloway's son. Galloway had filed five reports and two complaints with the NYPD regarding these disputes, but no arrests had been made.

Leigh was a retired probation officer from Chicago who had relocated to New York City three years ago. She lived on North Park Avenue in the Windy City until her move to the Big Apple.

Galloway, a former college athlete, was a graduate of Fordham University, where she returned as a volunteer assistant track and field coach for 17 years until 2019. She earned a bachelor's degree in arts in 2001 and a master's degree in science four years later from Fordham.

During her time at Fordham, Galloway competed as a high jumper and participated in sprints and relay teams. She placed third in the high jump at the Metropolitan Championships in her senior season.

The Fordham University community expressed deep sorrow over Galloway's untimely death. A school spokesperson described her as a dedicated volunteer and a talented athlete.

"We keep Marissa and her loved ones in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," the spokesperson said.

Police are continuing their investigation into the murder-suicide. The 1-year-old child who witnessed the horrific incident is now in the custody of child protective services.
