Murder Suspect in 1982 Cold Case Dies While Awaiting Trial

Billye Brown, a man charged with murdering his wife and daughter in 1982, has died while out on bond and awaiting trial. Brown's DNA linked him to the unsolved cold case, leading to his arrest last year.

The Abilene Police Department announced the death of 66-year-old Brown on July 27, 2024. In March 1982, Brown's then 30-year-old wife Susanna Flores Brown and their 8-year-old daughter, Franchesca Antionette Martinez, were found murdered in their Abilene home.

Brown was arrested in 2023 after DNA evidence linked him to the crime. He faced two murder charges and was released on $200,000 bond in October 2023.

According to court records, officers found Susanna's body face up on the floor with multiple injuries and a lamp cord wrapped around her neck. Feces were smeared on her body, which investigators did not believe originated from her.

Franchesca's body was found on the floor, partially under the bed with a phone cord wrapped around her neck. The investigation determined that both victims had been strangled.

Brown initially told investigators that he had brought chicken home for dinner and ate with his family before leaving for work. When he returned, he claimed to have found Susanna and Franchesca dead.

Court documents indicate that Brown's demeanor after discovering the bodies did not appear "overly upset," and he even made jokes.

Further investigation revealed marital problems between Billye and Susanna. Family and friends described Brown as "controlling and abusive."

The case remained unsolved for 41 years until Brown's DNA was matched to evidence found at the crime scene. In January 2023, investigators found DNA in Susanna's mouth, which they believed likely came from Brown.

In July 2023, authorities obtained a warrant to swab Brown's DNA, and as they retrieved the sample, he reportedly said, "I think I just signed my death warrant."

The Abilene Police Department expressed sadness over Brown's death but emphasized the dedication of their officers and investigators in bringing charges against him.

"Their commitment to justice reflects the values and mission of the Abilene Police Department," the department stated. "Our focus remains on seeking justice for the victims and providing closure for their families."
