The NFL Draft has achieved another milestone with a record-breaking attendance of over 700,000 fans who flocked to downtown Detroit for the three-day event. Governor Gretchen Whitmer made the announcement during the final day of the draft, which featured selections in rounds four through seven.
Detroit's historic turnout eclipses the previous record of 600,000 fans set in Nashville in 2019. The city drew an impressive 275,000 attendees on the first day, setting a new record for a draft opener. The following day, another 550,000 fans filled the streets, breaking the Day 2 attendance record set in Nashville five years prior.
The NFL's decision to make the event free to attend proved to be a winning strategy, generating significant economic benefits for Detroit. Visitors and residents are estimated to have spent over $160 million in the city, boosting hotels, restaurants, bars, and retail stores.
Former Lions running back Billy Sims, who was drafted by Detroit with the No. 1 overall pick in 1980, witnessed the enthusiasm firsthand at his barbecue tent on Woodward Avenue. "Fans have been great, and business has been good," Sims remarked. "To have the draft here is great for the entire state of Michigan."
The NFL is currently in discussions with over 20 teams interested in hosting future drafts, especially in colder-climate cities that may not be able to secure a Super Bowl bid. Green Bay is set to host next year's event.
In addition to the economic impact, the NFL Draft showcased Detroit's recent revitalization to a national audience of over 50 million viewers. The city presented a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, highlighting its new attractions, dining options, and cultural scene.
