One of Colombia's most notorious criminals, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, has escaped from prison during a mass jailbreak, potentially fleeing the country in the process. Footage captured on CCTV cameras shows Rodriguez covering his face with a towel as he hurriedly exits the holding cell.

Rodriguez, also known as "Zeus," was arrested two weeks prior to his daring escape on April 21st. The prison break began when an inmate faked an illness to lure guards into his cell and ambush them. The inmates used the cover of a tropical storm to mask their escape from the facility.

At least 21 other detainees also escaped in the jailbreak, according to local police. Reports suggest that as many as 50 inmates could now be at large following the incident. Some of the prisoners later returned after sustaining injuries during the escape, including one who was trapped under a collapsed fence.

Retired Army Major Juan Carlos Rodriguez has a lengthy criminal history, including arms trafficking and serving in the paramilitary for the Norte del Valle cartel. He was also suspected of carrying out extrajudicial killings on behalf of his criminal associates.

Authorities have initiated a wide-scale operation, including closing all exit routes from Cucuta, to recapture the fugitives. Police have offered a reward of 50 million Colombian pesos (around $12,000) for the capture of Rodriguez.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro denounced Rodriguez as a "type of criminal association" that "must be dismantled as soon as possible." He expressed concern that Rodriguez's escape could destabilize the country.

Three police officers have been arrested for their role in the escape, though details of their involvement remain scarce. Police suspect that Rodriguez played a key role in planning and executing the jailbreak.

Rodriguez's most recent arrest in April ended with parole in 2021, after he agreed to cooperate with authorities and provide information on ties between the military, paramilitary groups, and drug traffickers. He had provided information about the National Army's alleged support for a rival cartel gang member.

The prison break has raised serious concerns about corruption and security within Colombia's prison system. Police have launched an investigation to determine how Rodriguez and the other inmates were able to escape, and whether any officials were involved.
