Oklahoma State Football Helmets to Feature QR Codes for NIL Fundraising

Oklahoma State University is taking a unique approach to fundraising for its football program by placing QR codes on its players' helmets. These codes will link to a general team fund to increase the program's NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) money pool, which allows athletes to profit from their name and likeness.

Oklahoma State University's football helmets will sport a new addition this season: QR codes. These codes will provide fans with a convenient way to donate to the program's NIL fund, which supports the athletes and provides them with additional financial opportunities.

The QR codes, approximately 1.5-inch decals, will feature each player's name and number. While they may not be noticeable from the stands, they are expected to be visible in close-up shots during broadcasts and photos posted online.

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy is excited about the potential of the QR codes to enhance the program's NIL efforts. "This is a revolutionary step forward to help keep Oklahoma State football ahead of the game," he said. "It gives everyday fans across the world to have a real impact when it comes to supporting the NIL efforts for Cowboy football."

Gundy believes the QR codes will provide a direct and accessible way for fans to show their support for the team. "I'm thrilled about this opportunity for our players," he added.

However, Gundy expressed frustration with agents continuously contacting him regarding NIL deals. He stated, "Tell your agent to quit calling us and asking for more money. It's non-negotiable now. Start again in December."

The implementation of QR codes on the helmets is part of a broader initiative by the university to support NIL for its athletes. Oklahoma State recently established the "Cowboy NIL Club," which provides donors with opportunities to directly impact the lives of student-athletes.

The Cowboys enter the upcoming season ranked No. 17 in the AP Top 25, led by star running back Ollie Gordon II. Gordon won the Doak Walker Award last season as the nation's best running back and is eager to build on that success.

"You can tell the team is really hungry," Gordon said. "We have a lot of returners back and we can't be complacent. I feel like we haven't shown any part of being complacent. We’ve all been practicing like we haven’t been here before, and it’s been a really great thing."

Oklahoma State finished last season with a 10-4 record, second in the Big 12 behind the Texas Longhorns. The Cowboys will debut their new QR code-adorned helmets in the season opener against defending FCS champion South Dakota State on August 31.
