Pirates Release Rowdy Tellez, Deny Bonus Influence

The Pittsburgh Pirates have cut ties with first baseman Rowdy Tellez, despite rumors suggesting the move was linked to a pending performance bonus. The team insists that financial considerations were not the driving force behind the decision.

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a surprising move on Tuesday, designating first baseman Rowdy Tellez for assignment. The decision has sparked speculation that the timing of the release was influenced by a looming performance bonus owed to Tellez. However, the Pirates have vehemently denied any connection between the two events.

According to sources, Tellez was due to receive a $200,000 bonus if he reached 600 plate appearances during the 2023 season. However, with the Pirates struggling and Tellez failing to produce consistently, the team decided it was time to part ways with the 28-year-old infielder.

General manager Ben Cherington emphasized that the Pirates' decision was purely baseball-related. He stated that the team was looking for a different skill set at first base and that Tellez's performance in recent weeks had not met expectations.

"This was a difficult decision, but we believe it's the best move for the organization at this time," Cherington said. "We want to thank Rowdy for his contributions to the Pirates and wish him all the best in the future."

Tellez joined the Pirates in 2022 after spending the previous six seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers. In 146 games with Pittsburgh, he batted .219 with 13 home runs and 54 RBIs.

However, Tellez's production declined significantly in 2023. Through 72 games, he was batting just .200 with only seven home runs and 29 RBIs. His on-base percentage and slugging percentage also dropped considerably.

The Pirates have struggled mightily this season, currently holding the worst record in Major League Baseball. The team has been searching for ways to improve its roster and believes that releasing Tellez will allow them to explore other options at first base.

Several teams have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Tellez, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. However, it remains to be seen whether any team will be willing to take on the remaining portion of his $3.8 million salary for 2023.

The Pirates have 10 days to trade or release Tellez before he clears waivers. If he remains unsigned, he will become a free agent and can sign with any team.
