A federal appeals court has vacated the 7-year prison sentence of reality star Julie Chrisley, ruling that the trial judge erred in allowing the government to present evidence that the Chrisleys had a "propensity to commit fraud."

Chrisley and her husband, Todd, were convicted in June 2022 on charges of bank fraud and tax evasion. They were sentenced to 7 and 12 years in prison, respectively.

The Chrisleys appealed their convictions, arguing that the trial judge had erred in allowing the government to present evidence of their past financial dealings, which they said was irrelevant to the charges against them.

A three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the Chrisleys, ruling that the trial judge had abused his discretion by allowing the government to present evidence of their "propensity to commit fraud."

"The government's evidence of the Chrisleys' financial history was not relevant to the charges against them," the court wrote in its opinion. "The trial court erred in admitting this evidence, and we conclude that the error was not harmless."

The court also ruled that the trial judge had erred in instructing the jury on the definition of "willfulness." The court said that the trial judge's instruction "was not a correct statement of the law" and that it "may have misled the jury."

The appeals court's ruling is a major victory for the Chrisleys. It is unclear whether the government will appeal the ruling or seek a retrial.
