He argued that university leaders have a "responsibility" to shut down such protests due to their potential to disrupt classes and create an unsafe environment for Jewish students.
Moulton emphasized that while freedom of speech is a fundamental value, the protests' tactics had gone too far, threatening the well-being of Jewish students. He pointed out that the demonstrations had disrupted university operations and instilled a sense of fear among Jewish students.
Moulton highlighted the importance of striking a balance between protecting protesters' First Amendment rights and ensuring the safety of all students. He acknowledged that protesters had a right to express their views, but he drew the line at actions that threatened others.
"Protesting is one thing," Moulton said. "But threatening other students is not acceptable."
Moulton believes that universities have a duty to take action against disruptive protests. He cited the example of Harvard University, where sprinklers were activated to disperse protesters demonstrating against the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Moulton's call for campus closures comes amidst a growing pressure on Columbia University to address anti-Israel protests on its campus. Nearly two dozen House Democrats have written to Columbia's leadership, demanding the disbandment of an unauthorized "Gaza Solidarity Encampment" set up by pro-Palestinian activists.
Columbia University responded by threatening to suspend or discipline students who did not clear their belongings from the encampment by a specified deadline.
Despite Moulton's stance, some progressive members of Congress have expressed support for the anti-Israel protesters at Columbia University. They argue that the university's actions infringe on students' freedom of expression and that the protesters are raising legitimate concerns about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
